The Fisherman's Gym

The Play Club is fortunate to have its own clubroom in North Castle Street. The Fisherman's Gym, as the name suggests was originally used by St Andrews fishermen.

The floor area of 16 by 32 feet gives us a large rehearsal space, not much smaller than the stage at the Byre Theatre. Being able to rehearse under realistic conditions is a great advantage. We can set up scenery, which is left in position throughout rehearsals and work with the furniture and props which will be used in performance.

We also use the Clubroom for workshops, rehearsed readings and improvisation sessions.

Most of our scenery is built and painted at the Gym. We are able to work with it during rehearsal and it is then transported to the Byre Theatre for the get-in. At least, when we come to set up the scenery on stage we know that it fits together!

We are always in need of scenery builders, props, costume and backstage staff. You don't have to be an actor to be sure of a welcome.

See Club Nights for other activities at the Gym.

Where to find us: we're relatively easy to find: the gym is through the 2nd door down N Castle Street (from North Street) - there's a lamp over the door - go through the door into the courtyard and turn right up the stairs.
